In memoriam

Dr. Silas Cheuk

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Silas Cheuk. He was active for many years with the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) and spearheaded ACA's Chinatown Medical Clinic from 1979 until 1996.

Silas Chew Cheuk MD, age 79, of Valparaiso, Indiana and longtime resident of Farmington Hills, Michigan and Carlsbad, California passed away on March 25th, 2016 from cardiac arrest. He was born on June 29th, 1936 in Saigon, Vietnam. There he spent his youth and went on to study at St. Steven's College (secondary school) in Hong Kong. He then immigrated to the United States to attend college. After briefly attending Nyack College in New York, he transferred to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he received his BA in Mathematics. He went on to study engineering for a time at the University of Michigan but came to realize his passion for medicine and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1970. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan and it was there that he remained in private practice until his retirement in 2001.

Also important in his life was his service to Jesus Christ. He was a long time active member of Chinese Bible Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan as well as Harvest Evangelical Church of San Diego. He went on to lead several short term medical missions with MSI international to China and took part in several English teaching missions to China, as well as Brazil and Thailand (as recently as 2014). His love of music was also part of his ministry, serving as Choir director of Chinese Bible Church for many years and continued singing in the choir at church in San Diego.

He met the love of his life soon after his arrival to the United States and married Helen Cheuk (Huang) on September 7, 1959. They were married for 53 joyful years.

He is survived by his children Tobin(Christine) Cheuk of Morton Grove, Illinois, Derek(Amy) Cheuk of Valparaiso, Indiana and Lydia (Robert) Cheuk of New York City, New York and grandchildren Rachel, Zachary, Evan, Emily, Owen as well as several siblings and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen, as well as several siblings.
