In Memoriam | |
It is with great sadness that the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) reports the passing of Alex Mark on January 23, 2015, at the age of 90. Alex Mark was the ACA's first president, serving from 1972 to 1974. It was during his presidency that the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) was founded. Alex was a co-founder of the OCA. He along with K.L. Wang worked to realize a dream of having a national organization.
Alex and his wife Lillian were very active in the Chinese American and Asian American community in Detroit. Alex served as president for both the ACA in Detroit and OCA's Cleveland Chapter. Both Alex and Lillian were active and prominent in the Detroit Chinese community.
Alex came to the Detroit area in 1955 and worked for Massey-Ferguson. He was Massey Ferguson's first Asian Chief Engineer. He left for Milwaukee in 1966 to join Allis- Chalmers, and came back to Detroit in 1969 to work for Rockwell International. He left for Cleveland to join Eaton in 1977. He retired in 1994, and he and Lillian began splitting their time between Cleveland and St. Petersburg, Florida.
Alex was born in Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto in mechanical engineering, and received his MS and Ph.D. from Purdue. He and his family became U.S. citizens.
He is survived by his wife Lillian, son Ernest, and daughter Carolyn, two grandsons, a brother, and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held on March 21 at 2 pm at Maximo Presbyterian Church, 3200 58th Ave. South in St. Petersburg, Florida.
