ACA Recognized by Macomb County | | The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) was recognized by the Macomb County Community Services Agency (MCCSA) for providing services and assistance to Chinese American seniors in Macomb County.
ACA Resource Specialist, Eleana Loy, received comprehensive training on completing benefit access applications for the Department of Human Services, Social Security, and Older American Act funded programs. Ms. Loy fluently speaks Cantonese and English, and is able to assist the large population of Cantonese speaking older adults living in Clinton Township. She works at the Office of Senior Services and provides assistance to local Chinese American older adults.
Yan Chen is one senior who has benefited greatly from the collaboration between ACA and MCCSA. Mrs. Chen had frequent health issues, but because she cannot speak or understand English, she was unable to obtain health insurance. Under the recent expansion of Medicaid and the creation of the Healthy Michigan plan, Mrs. Chen met qualifications to receive healthcare coverage with a premium subsidy. Ms. Loy bridged the language barrier with several agencies to help Mrs. Chen obtain full medical coverage and monthly food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Mrs. Chen's health is improving and she feels that her life is better now that she is receiving medical care and eating more nutritious meals through the food assistance program.
