ACA Canton Summer Camp Recap

Chinese landscape scroll with 3 yr. & 5 yr. attendance trophies

The ACA Youth Cultural Summer Camp in Canton was a great success! We had many new campers and counselors! This year featured two new special projects. With the help of art teacher, Miyi Li, campers and counselors worked together to create a 15-foot long Chinese landscape scroll painting that served as the backdrop for our closing ceremony performance. Under the direction of local writer, Carlina Duan, we assembled a book featuring 10 short stories written by campers ranging from age 8 - 12. We also took field trips to the Spicer Orchard for blueberry picking and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour. Special thanks to Pastor Rennie Kauffman, Karen Kauffman, and the Risen Christ Lutheran Church for their support! A special thanks to the ACA staff, counselors, volunteers, and teachers who all worked very hard to make sure we had a wonderful camp this year!

2013-2014 Comcast Digital Connectors Recap
On June 1st, A class of 18 high school students graduated from the Comcast Digital Connectors program held at the Chinese Community Center. The program started on the second week of October 2013, continued throughout the school year, and ended the last week of May 2014. Throughout the course the students were educated in digital, media, and financial literacy with topics not only a curriculum, but also utilizing EverFi and Cisco to better help the students understand the topics. At the end of both EverFi and Cisco curriculums, those students who were able to pass the course were given a certificate of completion.

This program also helped improve the students' leadership, community outreach, and public-speaking skills. As an additional incentive, students who completed the program by meeting all the requirements received a laptop on top of their certificates. Those students who had an attendance rate of 95% or better were also given a $100 scholarship. In this year's graduating class, five students were able to attain the scholarship.
