Celebrating 40 Years of ACA   

 
 
Copies of the commemorative book Celebrating 40 Years of ACA are still available.

ACA Members can obtain one free copy of the book (one copy per household) at the Chinese Community Center (32585 Concord Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071) during office hours. Members can purchase additional copies of the book for $12 per book.

Non-Members can purchase a copy of the commemorative book for $20.

We thank the authors who contributed stories and photos for the book. We are especially grateful to the editors Chelsea Zuzindlak, Roland Hwang, and Robert Rothman for all their hard work.

ACA Services in Macomb County
The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) has received a grant to assist seniors living in Macomb County.

Assistance in Macomb County will be provided at:

Affordable Care Act Enrollment Assistance
The March 31st deadline to sign up for health insurance coverage through a health exchange is quickly approaching and the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) can provide help you with the enrollment process.

The Association of Chinese Americans has two trained Navigators who have assisted more than 150 families enroll in healthcare coverage through the government website.

There is still time to enroll. If you need help enrolling, please contact our Detroit Service Center at 313-831-1790 or our Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights at 248-585-9343 to set up an appointment with one of our Navigators.

Recap of ACA's Lunar New Year Events



ACA's Lantern Festival Community Fair
held on February 15th drew over 300 people to the Chinese Community Center. The Year of the Horse was celebrated with a lion dance performance, Yuanxiao (sweet rice dumpling) making demonstration, Chinese knotting, lantern painting, Chinese calligraphy, cultural performances, Chinese New Year food sales, and kid-friendly games and activities. Several community organizations also participated with informational booths.

About 170 people attended ACA's Lunar New Year Banquet on February 8th at the Golden Harvest Restaurant in Warren, Michigan. Guests enjoyed a gourmet 10-course dinner plus dessert, entertainment and raffle prizes.

Come learn this style of kung fu which is one of the most prominent traditional northern styles of Chinese martial arts.

APA Y-Advocate
On March 2nd, 26 high school students attended our APA Y-Advocate workshop. During this free, half-day workshop, students were given a chance to better understand what it means to be an advocate in the community through games, activities, and short seminars led by the two facilitators, Mary Dynne and Sara Furr. State Farm supported the workshop and a representative from State Farm gave a brief financial introduction.

Affordable Care Act Workshop  
ACA hosted this free workshop on February 23rd to provide information on the Act and its impact on Americans trying to obtain health insurance coverage. The guest speaker was Dr. Othelia W. Pryor, a distinguished public health expert. The workshop was held at the Michigan New Century Chinese School at Schoolcraft College in Livonia.

Member Spotlight
Congratulations to ACA member and Board Executive Vice President Ken Chan for placing 1st in five dance styles at the Michigan Senior Olympics (MSO) in Ballroom Dancing held Feb. 9th at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan.

He competed in the Pro/Am category at the Advanced Level in five International Standard style dances: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quick Step. As an amateur, he danced with his professional partner Pamela Preczewski (a certified professional dance teacher and owner of Dance Sport Academy of Michigan in Dearborn.) More than 70 dancers competed at this event with over 350 attendees and more than 100 dance heat events.

The MSO is a nonprofit organization which promotes health and lifestyle for citizens 50+ years old and includes a variety of other sports besides dancing.
