CAPA Scholarship Applications

The Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) announces a call for applications for its 2014 Scholars Award. This Award is intended for full-time high school seniors who will attend an institution of higher education in the State of Michigan and who will continue to reside in Michigan. Eligible candidates must have an Asian Pacific Anerican (APA) heritage and should be willing to serve on CAPA's Youth Committee to give back to the APA community. The deadline to submit applications is Monday, February 10, 2014.

ACA Lunar New Year Banquet

Join the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) as we welcome in the Year of the Horse at our popular Lunar New Year Banquet on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Golden Harvest Restaurant (6880 E. 12 Mile Rd, Warren, MI) at 6:00pm.
There will be a gourmet 10-course dinner with entertainment and raffle prizes.

ACA New Year Lantern Festival Community Fair
| | The community is invited to attend this free event on Saturday, February 15 from 11am-3pm at the Chinese Community Center (32585 Concord Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071) to celebrate the Year of the Horse.
Activities include Yuanxiao (sweet rice dumpling) making demonstration, arts & crafts, cultural performances, Chinese New Year food sales, and kid-friendly games and activities. There will also be informational booths of several community organizations.
The booth registration fee is $25 for Non-Profits and $35 for Businesses/Individuals/Organizations. If you would like to have a booth at this event, download this booth registration form, complete the form and pay the booth fee before the event.

Affordable Care Act Enrollment Assistance
| | The Association of Chinese Americans' two trained Navigators have assisted over 150 families to enroll in healthcare coverage related to the Affordable Care Act through the government website.
We are still offering enrollment assistance. If you need help enrolling, please contact our Detroit Service Center at 313-831-1790 or our Chinese Community Center at 248-585-9343 to set up an appointment with one of our Navigators.

High School Achievement Awards Banquet Recap

For the 30th year, ACA presented scholarships to several high school honorees who showed outstanding academic and community service accomplishments. The twenty-seven nominated honorees were recognized and scholarships were presented at the banquet on December 8, 2013. The honorees were: Laine Chan (Cranbrook), Weifong Chou (Athens), Amanda Guo (Troy), Nan Hu (Pioneer), Jessica Jiang (Novi), Grace Kao (Okemos), Lillian Liang (Troy), Kevin Ni (Plymouth), Preeti Rishi (Athens), Julian Sanders (Athens), Allen Wang (Troy), Eric Wang (Rochester Adams), Maxine Hao Hao Wang Pontius (Huron), Wan Wang (Plymouth), Daniel Wu (West Bloomfield), Karen Xiong (Northville), Alan Xu (Huron), Brian Xu (Detroit Country Day), Esther Yan (Athens), Kevin Yang (Huron), Victor Yang (Troy), Aillen You (Northville), Karen Young (Detroit Country Day), Alex Xue (Canton), Aaron Zeng (Detroit Country Day), Joy Zhang (Detroit Country Day), and Amy Zhou (Novi). ACA Scholarships were presented to: Kevin Yang (ACA Best All Around) Katherine Young (ACA 2nd Scholarship) Brian Xu (ACA 2nd Scholarship) Jessica Jiang (P.L. Siak Scholarship) Aaron Zeng (Mabel Peng Memorial Scholarship) Preeti Rishi (Chinese Language Scholarship) Aillen You (Chinese Language Scholarship) Esther Yan (Chinese Language Scholarship) Allen Xiu (Acacia 168 Scholarship) The Detroit Engineers Association (DCEA) will present their scholarships at their event in early 2014. CAPA will announce its recipients and present their scholarships at CAPA's Splendor of the East event in May 2014. See the side bar article for more information on the CAPA Scholarship Program. ACA Christmas Gift Drive for Homeless Children
ACA collected donations of toys, clothing, and gift cards for two weeks in early December and delivered the donated items to Cass Community Social Services for the children in their homeless shelters.
