OCA Scholarship Applications

OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates is accepting 2014 applications for the OCA-AXA Achievement and OCA-UPS Gold Mountain scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at $2,000 and is nonrenewable. The OCA-AXA scholarship is geared for students who have dedicated time to community service and demonstrated leadership ability. The OCA-UPS Gold Mountain scholarship is intended for APA students who are the first person in their family to attend an institution of higher education. In order to be eligible for these scholarships, students must be a current APA high school senior entering their first year of college, demonstrate financial need, be a permanent resident or U.S. citizen, nad have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale). High School Achievement Awards Banquet

For the 30th year, ACA is proud to present scholarships to several high school honorees who have shown outstanding academic and community service accomplishments. The twenty-seven nominated honorees will be recognized and scholarships will be presented at ACA's High School Achievement Awards Banquet on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 6PM at the Chinese Community Center (32585 Concord Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071). Along with the scholarships being awarded by ACA, co-sponsors the Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) and the Detroit Engineers Association (DCEA) will also be presenting scholarships. The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Xu, University of Michigan medical student and Class of 2009 Honoree. The guest speaker will be Frances Kai-Hwa Wang (blogger, Adjunct Instructor, and Asian American Activist). Tickets are: $30 per person (Patrons $100). ACA Gift Drive for Homeless Children

The Association of Chinese Americans is holding a gift drive for homeless children from now until Wed., Dec. 18th. Donated items will be delivered to Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) so that parents staying at the CCSS homeless shelters can select a gift for their children. Recommended gifts for younger children: pajamas, underwear, undershirts, socks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, boots. Recommended gifts for older children: basketballs, footballs, coloring books, crayons, LEGO, small play sets (My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, Polly Pockets), gym bags, jewelry, gift cards (Subway, McDonalds, CVS, AMC movie pass). Donated items should be new and unwrapped. Donations can be dropped off at the Chinese Community Center (32585 Concord Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071) during office hours of Monday-Friday 10am-4pm. ACA General Membership Meeting Recap
| | The annual General Membership Meeting was held on December 3rd at 7pm at the Chinese Community Center. A light dinner was be served to attendees prior to the meeting.
Members saw an overview presentation spotlighting the organization's programs from Executive Director Shenlin Chen. ACA Treasurer Shung H. (Sue) Sung report on the financial stauts and 2014 for the association. After the two Board candidates under consideration, Ms. Geck Budd and Ms. Jia Zhao, briefly introducing themselves, they were elected to the ACA Board by the members. The newly elected directors will serve on the ACA Board for the term of 2014-2016.

ACA 41st Anniversary Celebration Banquet Recap

About 160 people gathered on October 18 at the Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills to celebrate another year of accomplishments. The evening's highlights included a keynote speech from Mr. Andy E. Meisner, Oakland County Treasurer, Outstanding Counselor Awards presented to Franky Hang, Jinting Hayter, and Brian Lu. There were cultural performances by the Michigan Chinese Folk Dancing Group and Latin dances by James Sevilleno and Jenny Remington.

ACA Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
On November 16, ACA gave thanks to the over 90 volunteers who gave their time throughout the year in support of ACA programs, services, and facilities. ACA Board directors and staff praised and offered words of appreciation to the volunteers for their dedicated efforts.

Affordable Care Act Town Hall Meeting
About 120 people attended this gathering on November 9 to learn more about the Affordable Care Act and its potential impact on them. This event was presented by ACA, the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC), and Healthy Asian American Project. Officials from the Michigan Department of Community Health gave the presentation and answered questions.

Senior Club Anniversary Party
The Senior Club gathered to celebrate eight years together on October 18. The seniors had a great time performing dance routines, singing song selections, and acting in humorous skits that they created themselves. The guests enjoyed a catered Chinese food lunch and spirited camaraderie.
