Cherishing the Past, Celebrating the Present,
Embracing the Future
ACA's 40th Anniversary Celebration Gala Banquet
was held on October 12th at the Glen Oaks Country Club

The dignitaries included U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, State Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood, Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner, and Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano.
Our keynote speaker was Marcella Lee, news anchor for KFMB-TV San Diego. She was a former news anchor on WDIV-TV Detroit, a former ACA Board member, and a recipient of an ACA High School Scholarship. With her parents and family in attendance, she spoke of growing up as a Chinese American and the importance of embracing your heritage.

Margaret Wong was recognized with the Unsung Hero Award for all her years of devoted service and support. Outstanding Volunteer Awards went to Ting Chang and Chenpei Shang social work services and program assistance. An elegant and graceful performance by the Michigan Chinese Folk Dancing Group captivated the audience. Update on Comcast Digital Connectors Program
| |
We are very grateful to Comcast Foundation for giving us a grant and also giving us the opportunity to participate in the Digital Connectors Program.
This program focuses its curriculum on teaching high school and college students throughout a whole school year. We started our program on Sunday, September 30 with 20 students and the program will end in May 2013. The curriculum provides a total of six modules which include 156 hours of class time and also a requirement of 56 hours of community service. At the end of the program, students who are able to meet all the graduation requirements will be
able to obtain a netbook with a flip video camera.
In the past six weeks, the students finished covering Module One in which they learned about embracing diversity, basic computer literacy, the Internet, and many other basic foundations for this program. In class, students learn the lessons through lectures and also activities, games, and even special keynote speakers. For one of the courses, students were taught the basic components of the computer enabling them to assemble and disassemble the parts with ease. To further their understanding, we were able to find a professional who builds computers for a living to explain and demonstrate the process.
Other than Digital Literacy, students also learn how to be better leaders and the importance of communication and teamwork. Students also gain a better understanding on how to set and achieve their goals, how to create their personal mission statement, and also were given a short lecture on getting into college.
At the end of this program, we hope the students will comprehend the topics that were taught and also use the newly gained knowledge to help others within their community.

In Michigan, the program is called PATH. PATH workshops are held for six consecutive weeks for 2.5 hours per session. The workshops are designed to provide participants with tools to use to better manage their chronic conditions.
